Review:

My Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars

This book was well thought out and there was much promise for it to be great. But, I felt like there was something missing throughout the whole of this novel.

The characters were great, I didn't have a problem with them. Their character growth was well thought out. The romance was adorable and swoon-worthy. I loved the whole aspect of this novel; with action, intense plot, and adorable romance. What's there not to love? But, alas there was one thing that kept bothering me throughout the entirety of this novel, I can't seem to put my finger on it though.

Maybe if I re-read this book sometime in the future I'll like it a lot more, which is what I plan to do!

Review: Reawakened (Reawakened, #1) by Colleen Houck

Reawakened (The Reawakened, #1)
Colleen Houck
Young Adult Fantasy
August 11th 2015
Goodreads Link

Synopsis:

When seventeen-year-old Lilliana Young enters the Metropolitan Museum of Art one morning during spring break, the last thing she expects to find is a live Egyptian prince with godlike powers, who has been reawakened after a thousand years of mummification.

And she really can't imagine being chosen to aid him in an epic quest that will lead them across the globe to find his brothers and complete a grand ceremony that will save mankind.

But fate has taken hold of Lily, and she, along with her sun prince, Amon, must travel to the Valley of the Kings, raise his brothers, and stop an evil, shape-shifting god named Seth from taking over the world.

From New York Times bestselling author Colleen Houck comes an epic adventure about two star-crossed teens who must battle mythical forces and ancient curses on a journey with more twists and turns than the Nile itself.

My Review:

My Rating:
5 out of 5 Freaking Stars

My absolute favorite subject to learn about is Ancient Egypt, so when I heard that my favorite author was writing a series based on my favorite subject, I was ecstatic!

As always, Colleen does a superb job weaving fantasy and history and creating an epic, yet tragic tale of love and devotion.

This book was laugh out loud funny, nail-bitingly intense, heart-breakingly sad, and full of swoon worthy princes. What else could someone want in a book?

Amon, Ahmose, Asten, Dr. Hassan, and Lily were all wonderful characters that brought me to tears and made me laugh till it hurt. Lily transformed from Lilliana the follow-the-orders-New-Yorker-coward to Lily the brave-follow-her-heart-devotee. I loved Lily's character and felt her to be extremely likable and relatable. Dr. Hassan was an adorably funny worshiper that surprised me by the end of this book with how amazing he was.

My heart hurt by the end of this book that I was on the brink of flooding my room with tears. But!!! The epilogue saved my heart from being forever broken! There's hope yet!!!! I am extremely anxious for book 2 right now that it hurts!!!

Review: Flight From Death (Fly By Night, #1) by Yasmine Galenorn

Flight From Death (Fly By Night, #1)
Yasmine Galenorn
Adult Fantasy
July 7th 2015
GOODREADS LINK

Synopsis:

From New York Times bestselling author Yasmine Galenorn comes an all-new series set in the realm of her Otherworld novels.

I’m Shimmer, a blue dragon shifter. Thanks to a mistake, I was exiled from the Dragon Reaches and sentenced to work for Alex Radcliffe, a vampire who owns the Fly by Night Magical Investigations Agency. Now, not only do I have to adapt to Earthside culture, but every time I turn around, somebody’s trying to kill us. And worse, Alex is as gorgeous as he is exasperating. But you know what they say: All’s fair in love and bounty hunting…

When an old friend of Alex contacts him about a haunting at the High Tide Bed & Breakfast in Port Townsend, Washington, we think we’re on a simple ghost hunt. But our investigation quickly transforms into a deadly fight as we uncover an eighty-year-old murder, a cursed house, and a dark force trapping the spirits within. To stop impending disaster we must break the curse and lay the angry spirits to rest.

I rated this book.... 4 out of 5 stars

I thought that this book was okay, and honestly I feel like 4 stars is quite generous, but for whatever reason I decided to rate it that way.

There were many times I felt like the story dragged on, even when there was action! I don't know if it was Yasmine's writing style or that I wasn't in the mood to read this type of book.

I think I like Shimmer, but I don't know. Hopefully when the sequel comes out, Shimmer will have more depth and personality.

I really disliked the vampires in this book. They're definitely not what I imagine vampires to act and talk like. Vampires I picture are Vlad, Bones, Cat, Ian, etc in Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress world. I guess that maybe I'm just picky.

I also really didn't like Shimmer and Alex's romance. I completely do not ship them!

Otherwise, I really liked the overall concept and ideas from this book. Hope the sequel will be much better!

Waiting On Wednesday #16!

My W.O.W. Pick For This Week Is...

Through The Dark (The Darkest Minds, #1.5, #2.5, #3.5)
Alexandra Bracken
Young Adult Dystopia
October 6th 2015
GOODREADS LINK

Synopsis:

Don't miss this breathtaking collection of stories set in the world of the New York Times best-selling Darkest Minds trilogy. Featuring ebook original novellas In Time and Sparks Rise, available in print for the first time, and a gripping, brand-new novella, Through the Dark is a must-have for fans of the Darkest Minds. This collection contains three novellas: In Time, Sparks Rise, and Beyond the Night, as well as a sneak peek at the first novel in Alexandra Bracken's new series, Passenger.

IN TIME

Gabe's life has been devastated in the wake of the economic crash. The only option left for someone like him to escape his tragic past is to leave his small town behind and to attempt to become a skip tracer. This already almost-impossible task is made all the more difficult by his first "score,"a young girl who won't speak, but who changes his life in ways he could never imagine.

SPARKS RISE

Sam didn't think things could get worse at Thurmond rehabilitation camp. Then the Reds arrive. Everyone assumed the kids with firepower had been killed years ago. Instead they were taken away, brainwashed, and returned as terrifyingly effective guards. To her horror, Sam recognizes one of them: Lucas, the one spark of light in Sam's dark childhood.

Lucas has a deadly secret--he beat the brutal training that turned his fellow Reds into mindless drones. When Sam defends herself against an attack by a vile PSF guard and faces a harrowing punishment, Lucas must risk everything to save her.

BEYOND THE NIGHT

The government-run "rehabilitation camps" have been shut down, but kids with Psi powers are anything but free. Sam would rather be on her own than put in the care of a foster family and given the "cure"--a dangerous procedure that unclaimed kids across the country are being forced to undergo. But there's more at stake than just her own safety. Sam once made someone a promise, and the time has come to fulfill it.

Now that she's out of her camp, Mia only has one thought in her head: finding Lucas, her beloved older brother. She hasn't seen him since they were separated and taken to different camps years ago, before Mia even became Psi. When Sam, Lucas's childhood best friend, rescues Mia from the government's inept care, Mia learns that nothing is as simple as she thought--and the past that she's so desperate to salvage may not be possible to recover...

There have always been warps—tears between realities—and they’ve always been a threat to humanity. Most people are blind to them. But Hallie’s eyes are opening. Now that she’s going to school at the Protectorate, she’s learning there’s more to life than fun and games. The truth is, she’s just become part of Earth’s only shield against the monsters of the warps. Before, she didn’t think she was anything special. Now, yanked from her relatively normal life, she realizes that she doesn’t have a choice. When the emergency alarm sounds, calling everyone in the school to arms, even the young and inexperienced are needed. As one of the warp weavers—capable of closing the warps and stopping the monsters—Hallie must now work to save lives. And she must do it in the most complicated situation she’s ever experienced. Because there are sea serpents in the Thames, and Hallie has to close the doors that are letting them in. The problem is, they’re underwater, and they’re hungry. Now everyone is relying on her, and Hallie must find a way to do her job—with a brand new partner—before it’s too late. Because if she fails she’ll die, along with everyone who’s depending on her.

Excerpt:

Ruble crows again and leans forward, pressing his hand harder against the front of the skimmer, the muscle in his forearm tensing. Suddenly we’re zooming off over the water and I join in, yelling with the sheer joy of the movement. It’s like a rollercoaster—surfing on a rollercoaster.
See, Dad, I knew skateboarding was gonna be useful for something.
I keep myself in balance, shifting my weight automatically, years of practice coming in handy. Underfoot, through the ethereal layer of magic and technology that’s keeping us afloat, I can see Serpents. Two of them—one large, one small—are writhing deep in the water, coming up toward us.
I open my mouth to shout a warning, but Ruble is already spinning us away from the approaching sea demons. Then Paulie’s team swoops in, a huge war bow in the boy’s small hands, fierce glee painting his face with exultation. He hollers something and launches an arrow, which punches through the side of his bubble with no ill effects. The missile sinks deep into a Serpent’s flank in a blossom of cloudy blood, and the monster twists away from me and my companion. Ruble skids us sideways, London riverbank streaming past.
We’re going at a decent clip, halfway out over the river, when my hands start to glow.

My Review:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

This book blew me out of my seat! I loved it that much! Though at times I felt like the story was starting to get slow and boring, Mr. Wilson turned it all around and I was back to biting my nails throughout all the excitement.

The plot was very interesting. The characters were well thought out. I was rooting for Ifferon the entire time, even when he wasn't acting like the hero (and son of a god) like he should've been. I loved how, in truth, if most people were tasked with something like Ifferon was, would act like Ifferon did. It is scary to have to do something like that. There aren't many people who would just dive right in and complete the task.

All in all, Ifferon was made a more relatable  character.

The setting was made vivid and clear with Mr. Wilson's imagery techniques. I loved that I could see myself in that world.

Overall, this book is a great fantasy that dives head first into a new idea and does so spectacularly.
